Error while reverting from Field Permission back to Conent Permission module (Solved)

I came across this wonderful module "field permission" which can be used for more advanced permission settings for your contents. But then after sometime I realized that I needed to implement the Question/Answer module for my client. Now, the problem I faced was the Question/Answer module depends upon the "content permission module." With the "field permission" module already implemented, I was in a fix, because once I disabled the filter permission module and re-enabled the content permission I started getting queer error while accessing my Organic Group. Something like...

"user warning: Unknown column 'node_data_field_event_date.field_event_date_value' in 'where clause' query: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM (SELECT DISTINCT node.nid AS nid FROM d6_node node LEFT JOIN d6_og_ancestry og_ancestry ON node.nid = og_ancestry.nid INNER JOIN d6_node_access na ON na.nid = node.nid WHERE (na.grant_view >= 1 AND ((na.gid = 0 AND na.realm = 'all') OR (na.gid = 0 AND na.realm = 'og_public') OR (na.gid = 966 AND na.realm = 'og_admin')"

Few weeks back, I wasn't able to find the solution to this. But today while working around, I've found it.

What I noticed is that once you enable the Filter Permission module you are asked to uninstall the content permission module. And after enabling the Filter Permission module if you create a field_type
(in my case I'd created even_date, which as you can see in the aforementioned query was the culprit for all the errors...) and again revert back to Content Permission module you will start getting errors like mine.

To solve this, try these two simple steps:

Go to "admin/content/node-settings" and REBUILD PERMISSIONS and see whether that solves your problem or not.
Else go to "admin/user/permissions" and look for filed (in my case field_event_date) that's causing the error and see whether the required permission is granted to roles such as "authenticated users" and guest or the role of your choice. If, not grant the required permissions and SAVE.

Your problem should resolve now.

I was facing this problem where I was unable to display the background for my pager-number for the activeSlide for Views Singleframe slideshow.

Finally I applied this CSS code and got it working:

.views-slideshow-controls-bottom .pager-item.activeSlide a {
    background: url("../images/custom_images/pager.png") no-repeat center bottom transparent;        
}

So, the main thing is put an "a tag" after activeSlide ==> i.e activeSlide a.

For hover you can try this:

    background: url("../images/custom_images/pager.png") no-repeat center bottom transparent;
}

Ajax, JavaScript Error on Google Chrome, Drupal

Today, the whole day I noticed this queer problem in Google Chrome while using modules like Poll and Vote Up and Down. Usually with any modules that had an Ajax interaction. Like with the Vote Up Down the processing blue circle indicator wold simply keep circling and only after a page refresh it would display the votes.

I figured out, at least in my case, I had enabled the Firebug extension in Google Chrome and this was the villain. Once I disabled it all seem to be working just fine. So, here it is folks! Hope this helps..

How to display a drupal block on a particular || specific page?

Well, I wont say this is the shortest solution, but I guess for non-programmer it just might be the simplest and yet effective solution.

It's been quite sometime that I've really coded and since the time I came across Drupal most of my time has been in learning the admin part and so haven't quite got the time to dive into Drupal development.

Anyway, I will try to explain you my trick using an analogy that I just encountered a short while ago. I was trying to configure the visibility of certain blocks related to the Organic Module. I wanted certain blocks to appear only on the Organic module and tried two solutions but they couldn't quite meet my need of the moment.

As we know in the Drupal's Page specific visibility settings we have three options, namely:

1. Show on every page except the listed pages.
2. Show on only the listed pages.
3. Show if the following PHP code returns TRUE (PHP-mode, experts only).

We are going to use the 2nd option for our solution.

Solutions #1:

Here, selecting the "first option" I applied these settings below:

og [[refers to the main organic group page in your site ==> http://www.example.com/og ]]
og/* [[in Drupal * is a wildcard entry, here it means, the main og page, and all the various og pages]]

The problem I encountered using this solution was that, since the group topics, are content-type, once i visited a certain group topi, the url would change to something like this ==> "www.example.com/node/12." Because of this using the solution ==> og/* was pointless.

Then again I tried this solution using a PHP snippet from this website ==> http://geshan.blogspot.com/2009/11/show-drupal-blocks-only-on-specific.html, I liked his solution but it quite didn't fulfill my requirement.

So eventually I came up with my own basic and simple solution. It's just tweaking the first solution. In the block configure page:

Select ==> "Show on only the listed pages."
and type this in the box below each statement in a new line:
og
og/*
node/12

Note: You will have to find the node id. of your group content-type and replace 12 with it. To find the node-content type,simply edit that content-type and check the url.. there you should be able to view the node-number(id)

Converting 7zip (.7z), WinZip (.zip) files into Gzip (.gz) in Windows

This solutions especially helped me a lot for importing my "MySQL Dumps" from my local server to my remote server.

My problem & How this Solution Helped me:

My web-host seem to have restricted "importing .zip mysql dumps" to my server. And my Xampp which is an older version (XAMPP for Windows Version 1.7.1 !) don't seem to work well with Gzip. The newer version of Xampp does work well but since right now I am obliged to use PHP 5.2.x I haven't upgraded.

So, blabbing apart, here's the solutions:

Use this small but very powerful called Win-Gz tool to compress / decompress any file(s) into .gz (GZip) format. You can also use ArcConvert to make compression from .7z into .gz ... .gz into .7z etc...

If you are not the shell kindda user or a command prompt buff, you can use this small but effective GUI ( (Graphical User Interface) ) tool for applying patch to your Drupal files. I've noticed the various kind of errors esp in modules such as UberCart, Advanced Users and also when your web server is using a PHP 5.3.x version, and applying the "relevant patch" seems to be the only solution.

Here's how you apply the patch using Tortoise SVN:

Before you apply the patch please backup your database and the file system (your drupal folder on the web server) else you might regret later ;-)

1. Download the relevant patch from Drupal. Click on the patch.

2. A Window will open from where you can select the folder you want to patch. Yes, the folder and not the file, (Tortoise will automatically detect the relevant file that's needed to be patched).

3. Finally go to File and Save.

BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart - What to do?

I just tried to install Windows 7 (32 bit) Ultimate edition on my friend's 4 year old Toshiba Satellite Laptop. Firstly I created another D:\ (can be any label of your choice.. E:\, F:\ etc...) Primary Partition from the default single C:\ drive partition. For installing an OS, a Primary Partition is recommended.

The installation went fine until the time the computer restarted? & Lo!!! I got this queer BOOTMGR error!!!!!!!!!!!!

After Googling here and there for the solution... I eventually arrived at one. Follow the steps below:

1. First go to your BIOS (at the time of restart) by pressing F2 and change your Boot Priority to CD\DVD.

2. Save and Exit and the computer will restart. An option like "Press any key to boot from CD will be displayed on your screen.... " Press any key.... After sometime the windows Installation Menu will appear.. Select your option (which is not important... I mean any option can be selected..") and click next...

3. Click 'Repair my Computer'
At the prompt to select your OS installation, click the button that says 'Load Drivers'. This should bring up a explorer-style drive browser.

Then just right-click on the drive you tried to compress, and deselect 'Compress this Drive', which should still be ticked on. Hit apply, and apply to subfolders/files. Usually it must be the C:\ drive.. You can go to your C:\ drive by clicking on My Computer or Computer... Once the C:\ drive is displayed.. Right click on it.. Select Properties.. and then Uncheck "Compress this drive to save disk space" & Reboot.

Your Problem should resolve!!!!

Youtube or any website Not Loading Properly :: Flush your DNS

Today something queer happened around evening time while I was trying to access youtube. Through out the day I was able to access YouTube as usual, as normal, without any error. But around evening time whenever I tried to access YouTube particularly from my Mozilla Firefox 3+, the website was loading but without any CSS. In the sense, YouTube was loading but without any design. I was still able to watch videos, but everything from the YouTube video player, related videos, recommended videos, comment box etc were being displayed in a very distorted manner. The problem existed even till now.

And just now I came up with the solution. While trying to work with my website, I was trying some DNS & network related commands, during which I tried this solutions.

1. Press the Window Key + R (the key with the Windows Logo) also called the Command key or open the Run Dialog Box.

2. In the Run Box type >>> cmd or command and press enter.

3. One inside the DOS interface type ipconfig/dnsflush.

This should resolve your problem.

This is quite a simple solution. Please use Mozilla Firefox because with Firefox it's the most easiest implementing this.

1. Open the webpage containg the ".swf file." Example >> http://www.example.com/video.swf

2. Goto File in the Firefox Menu and Select "Save Page As" and save the .swf file to your desired location.

3. You can also simply use the Shortcut Key "Ctrl+S" while in your browser.

Unable to Access Blogger, Blogspot, Blog not Opening, DNS Error

Two days ago I faced a queer problem that I'd never faced in my whole 2 years+ experience of blogspot. Every time I entered my "blog-url" in my Firefox I would get the following errors:

"Problem loading Page....

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at abc.blogspot.com............"

I freaked out ... WTF??? .. I even posted on my FB wall ... "Surprised to know that even a Service Provider like Google could experience downtime....." A chilling thought even ran into my mind ~ "Had Google blocked my blog?"

But after some "googling" and waiting I found out ~ All My Guesses Were Simply Wrong!!!! The problem had nothing to do with Google | Blogger. The problem lied with my ISP and the Dynamic IP assigned to me by my ISP (Internet Service Provider."

How I figured out the flaw was from my ISP and NOT Google?

I simply visited http://proxy.org/ and accessed my blog and Voila!!! I could access my blog quite conveniently. Then I called up my friend who works for IBM and asked him to check as to whether he could access my blog(s) from his home-computer. And again, YESsss he could. Again I used an IP changer software, which creates a "dummy IP" to conceal your IP. Here I changed my IP to Plano, Texas, US and again I could access my blog.

Now with all these test I became sure of the possible problem and it had nothing to do with Blogger | Google. The problem was with nobody but my ISP.

What can|should you do NOW?

I guess either you wait and see if the problem resolves on its own. In the sense, if your ISP has assigned you a "Static IP" then I guess you call 'em up ASAP (immediately) and tell them about the problem ~ a DNS error that you're facing while trying to access blogspot blogs. If you are the one with a Dynamic IP then you can well wait for sometime; because a Dynamic IP is never the same unlike Static IP. Dynamic IP changes each time you shutdown and restart your computer. Once you have a new IP it should resolve matters for you.

Well the above scenario worked for me that's why you can see I am able to make this fresh post.

4. A box called Custom Privacy will open.

5. On the "Make this visible to" option; Select "only me" and finally Click on "Save Setting."

Now you can change your relationship status to the status of your choice.

Once you've made the required relationship status change, follow the steps above and in the Visible section >>> Select >>> "Make these visible to: friends, friends of friends" depending on your choice.

Well this is not exactly a hack or a crack to be specific & clear. It's just a simple way to bypass the WAT or commonly known as Windows Activation Technology and use Windows 7.

If you possess a copy of Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit), during the Installation Process, you are asked whether you would like to Enable Automatic Update or not? Simply Select "Never Check for Updates" and continue with your installation and finish it.

Once done with the installation Click on the Start Button and on the Search Box that appears type Update. Now click on Check for updates.

A new Window should open and just below the Heading "Important Updates" Select the option "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them."

I just discovered that you can actually forward any mails from your email account, especially the one's you like, and publish them directly or save it as a draft in blogspot. Isn't that a really nice thing. So, you wanna try them. Follow the steps below. It's damn easy...

Step 1: On your Dashboard please click on the Setting link.

Well, I really don't think so, because last night I have been experimenting with the meta tags and even if doesn't work with the search engine, which I am still not sure of and still checking, I can assure you that it will work with your Adsense. Blogs may get deleted in a number of ways. Once deleted a blog is not lost forever so do not panic. However it is always safer to backup your blogs regularly so that there is a fallback solution.

Also remember to backup your template and to backup your widgets template data as further insurance.

There are a number of solutions to recover deleted blogs............

How do blogs get deleted? This may occur in a number of ways :

1. Accidental clicking of "Delete This Blog" button at the bottom of Settings--->Basic subtab. ( Login at Blogger.com----->Click Settings link on Dashboard).

2. If you have contravened the Blogger TOS your blog may get deleted by them.

3. By hacking into your account. Make sure that you have a strong password and change it regularly to prevent this.

4. By deleting your Google Account. This does not delete the blog but deletes the Blogger service associated with your Google account and prevents access to your Blogger Dashboard.

5. Pseudo-Deletion. This happens when you cannot see your blog on the Dashboard after login at Blogger.com. You think the blog is deleted. Actually it is in another account. To locate it login with all the email addresses you have, one at a time. If you have forgotten the password get it reset via : http://www.blogger.com/forgot.g . If login is unsuccessful see the options at Checklist for Blogger Login problems.

Changing Blog Address (URL) does not delete the blog. Your original address may be picked up by spammers also the new address will not get your old traffic. Hence changing the blog address is not advisable for old blogs.

RECOVER POSTS AND BLOG URL

To recover a deleted URL simply login to the account (Blogger.com) which deleted it. Click the Create a Blog link on Dashboard and type in same URL and follow the arrows to reclaim it. This will not recover your posts. To recover your posts go to Google.com and type in the search box :

Replace the CAPS with your blog url/link/address. Click Search button. This will only work if your blog has been indexed by Google. It will not work with blogs which have been created and deleted within 2-3 weeks of their creation. You can then copy the posts and paste them in your reclaimed blog.

Lastly DO NOT DELETE YOUR BLOG IN ONE ACCOUNT SO THAT YOU CAN CREATE IT IN ANOTHER. Instead Transfer blog from one account to another by changing owner.

Also deleted blogs do not disappear from the Internet instantaneously. They stay in the Google cache as shown above. To totally remove them you have to submit request at Google Webmaster Tools after deletion :

Technical challenges to online privacy

The Internet did not evolve with privacy in mind. In fact, the protocols that provide the fundamental underpinnings of the Internet are inherently non-anonymous. It's just a simple matter of computers needing to know each other's addresses in order to exchange data. For instance, our server has detected your Internet Protocol (IP) address as "59.164.100.213". Other characteristics that a server can detect about you are your referrer (the site from which you are linking), the user-agent (the program you are using to browse the Web), and your operating system.

What does your IP address reveal about you?

Your IP address reveals your point of entry to the Internet and can be used to trace your communications back to your ISP, your employer's network, your school, a public terminal. 1) Niche Sites

Targeted niche sites that have a clear theme, tend to generate more advertising revenue simply because it is easier to achieve decent search engine placement.. Be warned though, you want to chose a niche where there is a sufficient number of advertisements available.

2) Target Keywords

When determining the site’s focus, consider how much the advertisers pay for the advertisements. If the site is focused on ringtones, the payout per click is going to be very small. Because ringtones are not high ticket items, advertisers will not spend a lot on pay-per-click advertisements.

With less obvious markets, use Overture to determine how much advertisers pay per keyword. The cost will usually be similar on Google. Building a website can be very rewarding, especially if the website receives lots of visitors. The more visitors you get, the more money you will make through advertisements, sales and other methods. What is the best way to receive lots of visitors and make a lot of money online? The first thing that comes to mind is quality contents! Your main focus should always be quality contents!!! Offer people exactly what they are looking for and you will benefit in the long run. If you have nothing good to offer, then you will receive nothing in return. I didn’t just made this up, this is the truth and if you observe history and all the successful companies in the world, you can very much understand why this is the truth. The top 100 websites on the web did just this and they continue to offer people quality contents day by day. They offer people useful information, products, tools, etc… and they reap the rewards.

You might be thinking, how can I offer quality contents when I have no money and no original ideas? Do you know something that other people don’t? You have to know something, right? Of course you know something, write about it, blog about it, share it; put it on your website, then tell people about it and build links to it. Knowing is one thing, you must also organize those information and make it visible to people. Take for example: monetizeguru.com, my main focus is to show people how to make money online. Many websites have done this and I’m pretty much the last in line. I’m way behind everyone else. However, I believe I have the skill, knowledge, creativity and the patient to be among the top competitors for this specific niche. I will approach this with an open mind and use my imagination to make this site unique and interesting. I’m not a very good writer, that’s why I hire writers for my other websites. This is the only site that I personally write on and it’s kind of tough and a little time consuming for me.

If you have quality contents, the next step is to make it visible to the people who are interested. Look for keywords that people search for and have little competitions and write about it. Use this tool to help you: http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/. I use this tool a lot and the best thing about it, it’s FREE. This tool will give you an idea of what people are searching for and how much competitions there are for that keywords phrase. It is not 100% accurate and the data presented may be outdated (a week or two outdated). Don’t limit yourself to this tool to tell you what to write because you should always write about things you love no matter how much competitions there are. However, make sure not to blog about random things because that’s a waste of time for both you and the reader. Don’t update your site with useless information everyday and thinking it will attract a lot of visitors. Avoid writing things that have no meaning and no purpose. People have better things to do then go to your site and waste 5 minutes of their time, make sure to avoid this fatal mistake.

When you first registered a new domain, Google will put your site in a sandbox and your pages will disappear from Google from time to time. Be patient and keep building links to it naturally. It’s not wise to build so many pages the first 3 months because it will not be detected by Google for a while and it might be a waste of contents. Google’s Sandbox will be discussed further in the next post. If you’re blogging, I recommend writing about 5-12 total pages for the first 3 months. After 3 months, you can start adding contents more frequently.

How To Display Codes Properly In Your Blog Post

If you would like to display codes for various tips and tricks, hacks or anything for that matter, for heling and sharing your information with fellow blogger; the article below might be handy for you.

HTML and Javascript codes perform different functions for our blog posts, such as changing the appearance of text like this. But when we need to display the actual code used to perform these functions, we can't simply paste this code into a post as it will perform the function, and not display as regular text.
The two different ways you can post is by use of blockquotes and iframes. In this post I'll explain how you can use these methods to display readable code in your own blog posts.

The problem when trying to paste code into your posts is that it will perform the intended function, rather than display as regular text. For example, if I wanted to explain how to make text italic, I could try adding this into my post:

<i>This is italic text</i>

But if I simply paste this code into a post, the effect will be this:

This is italic text

This is because the code is performing the function of the code I pasted, rather than displaying as readable text.
To display this code as text, we need to use "character entities instead.

What are "character entities"?

You could say that HTML uses a special language, and that we need to say things in a different way for a web browser to understand it. Character entities make the browser understand that we want to display a certain character, rather than use the function of this character.
Character entities are made up of three parts:

An "ampersand" (the & symbol)

Either a descriptive phrase, or a # followed by a number

A semicolon (the ; symbol)

Here is an example of the character entity for the © (copyright) symbol:

This example uses the descriptive phrase "copy", though it could also be used with the # and it's number instead:

Either of these methods will have the effect of reproducing the © symbol in your blog post (or in any web page for that matter!).

The most common character entities you will need to use

Here are the most common characters and their equivilent character entities you would need to use to display code in your posts:

Using the character entities

In the code you would like to display, you will need to substitute each of the HTML characters above with the equivalent character entity. For example:

<i>This is how to display italic text</i>

Should be written instead as

<i>This is how to display italic text</i>

This is more commonly known as "escaping" the HTML code.
You could write these character entities by hand each time you need to display code in your blog posts. However, I find it easier to use the "replace" function in Notepad to replace each instance of a certain character with the equivalent character entity. Alternatively, you could use the free HTML code parser tool provided by BlogCrowds which can substitute all necessary characters for you in one click!

Displaying the "escaped" code in your blog posts

As I mentioned right at the beginning of this post, I use two different methods to display code in my posts: blockquotes and Iframes (inline frames).

Blockquotes

Blockquotes are useful if you only need to display a small section of code. Usually, your blog template will indent any content which is enclosed in

tags; sometimes styling will also be used, such as a different colored background or border.

To display your code as a blockquote, you will need to use the following format:

<blockquote> Your content/"escaped" HTML code goes here </blockquote>

Iframes

Iframes (inline frames) are more useful to display long sections of code, such as the template codes displayed in the Templates section of this blog. They are used to display the content of an external file in the body of a page, and can be used to display a large amount of content in a small amount of space. If the dimensions of the iframe are smaller than those of the content it contains, the iframe will have scrollbars so your readers can access the whole content.
Unfortunately iframes are slightly more difficult to create than blockquotes as the content of the iframe must be externally hosted; it is not a part of the page itself.
To create the content of an iframe, you will need to create an HTML file containing your "escaped" code. Don't worry about adding all the elements of a regular web-page, such as the head and body tags: the easiest way to create the HTML file is to paste your escaped HTML code into your favorite text editor (such as Notepad) and save this with an ".html" extension.
You will then need to upload this to your hosting account, and note down the URL of this HTML file. If you don't already have an external hosting account, check out this post to read about some of the best free hosting providers.
Once you have uploaded your HTML file to an external host, you will need to call the iframe in the body of your blog post. To do this, you can use the following format, substituting the example URL for that of your HTML file:

You can then preview your blog post to ensure the code displays correctly within the iframe.If you prefer, you can also specify the dimensions of the iframe to ensure it doesn't stretch too far down or across the page in your post like this:

What are feeds? I see "RSS", "XML", and "Atom" out there, but I don't know how I might use these links when I find them.

Feeds are a way for websites large and small to distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into "widgets," "gadgets," mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display blogs, podcasts, and major news/sports/weather/whatever headlines just about anywhere.

What Does This Mean?

You may recognize the universal feed icon or these "chicklets" from your favorite websites, blogs, and podcasts. These icons represent content in any format - text, audio or video - to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen using a feed reader. What's that?

Why is This a Good Thing?

Technology evolution in online publishing has made it really easy to not only publish regular updates to web-based content, but also keep track of a large number of your favorite websites or blogs, without having to remember to check each site manually or clutter your email inbox. You can now streamline your online experience by subscribing to specific content feeds and aggregating this information in one place to be read when you're ready.

Consumer Bottom Line: Subscribing to feeds makes it possible to review a large amount of online content in a very short time.
Publisher Bottom Line: Feeds permit instant distribution of content and the ability to make it "subscribable."

Who publishes feeds?

Google publishes feeds as part of many of our services; for example, you can get a feed of new items for any search you make in Google News. In addition, hundreds of thousands of bloggers, podcasters, and videobloggers publish feeds to keep themselves better connected to their readers, listeners, admirers, and critics. Apple, through its iTunes Music Store, offers tens of thousands of audio and video podcasts for download, each of which is powered by a feed.

How do I read feeds?

If you want to browse and subscribe to feeds, you have many choices. Today, there are more than 2,000 different feed reading applications, also known as "news aggregators" (for text, mostly) or "podcatchers" (for podcasts). There are even readers that work exclusively on mobile devices.
Some require a small purchase price but are tops for ease-of-use and ship with dozens of feeds pre-loaded so you can explore the feed "universe" right away. Free readers are available as well; a search for "Feed reader" or "Feed aggregator" at popular search sites will yield many results. A handful of popular feed readers are listed at the bottom of this page.
A typical interface for a feed reader will display your feeds and the number of new (unread) entries within each of those feeds. You can also organize your feeds into categories and even clip and save your favorite entries (with certain applications).
If you prefer, you can use an online, web-based service to track and manage feeds. Online services give you the advantage of being able to access your feed updates anywhere you can find a web browser. Also, upgrades and new features are added automatically.

Step 6: Check on the Expand Widget Box.

Step 7: Before you proceed and make any further changes, the first thing you should do is to back up your template. You can backup by clicking on the link Download Full Template. This will be handy for you to restore your earlier template, in case you encounter any kinds of errors.
